YLF is always looking for energetic and motivated men and women of character to serve as volunteer tutors, teachers and mentors for our school year programs. It is only through the commitment of such volunteers that YLF is able to help DC's youth, since we depend entirely on non-paid volunteers to staff our programs.
Our programs offer opportunities for those of all ages and abilities: from high school students looking to complete required community service hours, to young professionals looking for something substantive to fill their free time. Below are descriptions of the many opportunities available to those interested in volunteering at the Youth Leadership Foundation.

Elementary School Program Tutor
ES program tutors work closely with a group of 3-4 3rd-6th grade students, helping them with their school work (primarily in the areas of English & Math) while also setting individual weekly goals with them to help build better habits.
Middle School/High School Program Tutor
MS/HS program tutors function much like the ES program tutors (see above), except the work is more advanced as the grade level increases, and tutoring occurs more in a group setting rather than a one-on-one setting.
Middle School/High School Program Mentors
MS/HS program mentors focus exclusively on meeting one-on-one with students to help them internalize what is being learned in the character classes and to assist them in setting appropriate weekly goals. Mentors, in order to properly serve as good role models, must both understand and embrace the Christian virtues underlying YLF's Four Pillars of Success, and be willing to receive training and personal formation from YLF's Character Development personnel.
Reading & Writing Workshop Teacher
Reading & writing teachers focus solely on developing students' reading comprehension, writing, and grammar skills. Each program (Elementary School, Middle School, and High School) has a separate Reading & Writing position to fill. Candidates generally have completed or are enrolled in a four-year college. The curriculum is developed by YLF's full time staff, with the Reading & writing teacher implementing the curriculum each Saturday.
MS/HS Math Workshop Teachers
Math teachers help the students with "back to the basics" type math work, focusing not only on the four basic operations but also on showing their step-by-step work and hand-writing their calculations. Math workshops are integrated into our MS and HS programs, but not the ES program. Candidates generally have completed or are enrolled in a four-year college. The curriculum is developed by YLF's full time staff, with the math teacher implementing the curriculum each Saturday.
HS Leadership Seminar Teachers
Teachers of our HS Leadership Seminar help 9th and 10th grade students transition into the increased responsibility of high school, develop greater personal initiative, and establish better group-work skills. Leadership seminar teachers should have completed a degree in a four-year college and should exhibit the type of character and entrepreneurship necessary to lead such a seminar.
PALS Visual Arts Instructor
The PALS ES program (3rd - 6th grade) is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Visual Arts teacher to teach an Arts & Crafts class to one 3rd/4th grade section and one 5th/6th grade section. Sections include about 20 students and class aides will be provided.
PALS Performing Arts Instructor
The PALS MS program (7th & 8th grade) is looking for a performing arts instructor to help students rehearse and prepare for an end-of-semester vocal music concert or dance presentation. The type of music/dance can be modified based on instructor's experience.
TAP Sports Director
The sports director is responsible for conducting two sports sessions each Saturday: one for the ES program and one for the MS/HS program. Sports sessions involve breaking students into teams for games and conducting skill-building exercises. The sports director has the freedom and the ability to expose students to a number of sports, both traditional and non-traditional.
How to Apply

All applications will be reviewed upon receipt and applicants will be contacted about attending the training session. Volunteers
